What happens if a tenant pays to the wrong account number?

A payment to the wrong account number goes back to the tenant. Here's how to resolve it.

Does a tenant pay to an account number that doesn't belong to the sales invoice? Then the money comes back. Here's how to resolve it.

OWNER Pay is being replaced by OWNER Wallet (expected end of 2026). You keep the same account; your account just needs to be verified again.

How can this happen?

  • The debtor's account number has changed and the tenant is still using the old number.
  • The tenant uses the account number from their iDEAL payment overview for a regular bank transfer.

What happens to the amount?

As a rule, the amount is refunded automatically to the payer's account. Neither you nor the tenant needs to do anything. It's usually back within a few days.

What should the tenant do next?

  1. Wait until the amount is back in their own account.
  2. Pay again to the account number on the sales invoice, or via the payment link.

Note: a payment to the account number from the iDEAL overview will be refunded again. Always have the tenant use the account number on the sales invoice or the payment link.

Frequently asked questions

The amount hasn't come back after a few days. What now?

Have the tenant contact their own bank. If that doesn't resolve it, contact support.

A debtor's account number has changed. How do I prevent problems?

Let the debtor know clearly that there's a new account number. A payment to the old number isn't lost, but it does cost the tenant extra time.
