Invoice date and invoice number: what can and can't you do?
Invoice date in the past, sending date, invoice number and the layout of the sales invoice.
We often get the same questions about the invoice date and invoice number of sales invoices. Here you can read what is and isn't possible.
In this article
Invoice date
An invoice date in the past
A sales invoice with an invoice date in the past isn't possible. That's intentional: the period in a connected accounting package may already be closed. If you see an error message when changing the invoice date, this is often the reason.
Which invoice date do automatic sales invoices get?
You set this under Settings > Modules > Contracts > Rental contracts. See How does automatic invoicing work?
Is the sending date on the sales invoice?
No. A sales invoice can be sent multiple times, while the content and invoice date stay the same. The invoice date is the official date for your records. OWNER does record when a sales invoice was sent.
Invoice number
You set up invoice numbering per owner: with or without the year, with a fixed prefix and with the number you start with. See How do I set up invoice numbering?
Sales invoices for January already in December?
Want to send sales invoices for January in December already, with the new year in the invoice number? Contact support and we'll look into it with you.
Layout of the sales invoice
All sales invoices use a fixed layout. Per owner, you can change the logo and details, such as the address, VAT number and IBAN. You do that under Settings > Environment settings > Owners.
Tip: want to invoice a period again? You do that via Invoiced until. You correct an incorrect sales invoice with a credit invoice.
