What do the different start and end dates on a rental contract do?
The rental contract, invoicing and sales items each have their own dates.
A rental contract has three kinds of start and end dates: of the rental contract, of the invoicing and of each sales item. Together they determine what OWNER invoices and when.
In this article
The three dates
| Date | What it determines |
|---|---|
| Rental contract start and end date | The period in which the tenant rents the unit. |
| Invoicing start and end date | When OWNER starts invoicing and, if applicable, stops. Usually the same as the rental contract start date, unless invoicing has already been done elsewhere. You only fill in an end date if invoicing needs to stop before the rental contract does. |
| Sales item start and end date | When a sales item does or doesn't appear on the sales invoice, for example a temporary discount. |
Which date takes precedence?
The dates are layered. The end date of the rental contract takes precedence over the end date of the invoicing, which in turn takes precedence over the end date of a sales item.
Tip: Is the rental contract ending? Then the end date of the rental contract is enough. You don't need to fill in an end date for the invoicing or for each sales item.
