# Sales items
## Determine what goes on the sales invoice and automate your invoicing.
A sales item is a line on the sales invoice, such as base rent, service costs or a parking space. You link sales items to a rental contract; OWNER prepares the sales invoices based on them.

## What is a sales item?
A sales item records what you invoice, for what amount and in which period (start and end date). Each sales item belongs to a category, for example Rent. OWNER uses that category for indexations, insights and management invoices, among other things.
**Note:** OWNER only has sales items and purchase items. You link sales items to a rental contract and [purchase items](https://knowledge.owner.app/en/purchase-items?hsLang=en) to a service contract.
## What can you do with it?
- Automatic invoicing: without sales items, OWNER doesn't know which amount to put on the sales invoice.
- Indexing: sales items are included in the indexation. After an approved indexation, new sales invoices reflect the new price.
- Recording future changes: with a start and end date, you can record a rent increase or discount in advance.
- Keeping track: under **Contracts \> Sales items** you see all sales items of all your rental contracts. Like all lists in OWNER, you can export them to Excel.

## Adding or changing a sales item
### Step 1 – Edit the rental contract
1. Open the rental contract and click the pencil at the top right.
2. Scroll to **Sales items**.
### Step 2 – Add the sales item
1. Click the plus sign to add a sales item, or click an existing sales item to change it.
2. Choose the item, fill in the amount and, if needed, a start and end date.
3. Save the rental contract.
You manage which sales items you can choose under **Settings \> Modules \> Financial \> Sales invoices**, tab **Sales items**.
## Good to know
- Always use a real item, such as base rent or service costs. If you work with an accounting integration, link the sales item to a ledger account.
- The dates are layered: the end date of the rental contract takes precedence over the end date of the invoicing and that of the sales item.
