# Purchase items
## Record the agreed costs with the service contract they belong to.
Purchase items are the cost items you agreed on with a supplier. You link them to a service contract, so you know what a contract should cost.

## What is a purchase item?
A purchase item is the counterpart of a sales item. You link sales items to a rental contract (what you invoice) and purchase items to a [service contract](https://knowledge.owner.app/en/service-contracts?hsLang=en) (what you pay). Think of the monthly amount for elevator maintenance or cleaning a stairwell.
## Adding a purchase item
### Step 1 – Open the service contract
1. Go to **Contracts \> Service contracts** and open the service contract, or create a new service contract.
### Step 2 – Add the purchase item
1. Edit the service contract and add the purchase item with the amount and the period.
2. Save the service contract.
You can see all purchase items of all your service contracts under **Contracts \> Purchase items**. You can export this list to Excel too.

## Good to know
- Purchase items don't create sales invoices or indexations. They only record what you agreed on with a supplier.
- Record your service contracts with a start and end date. Then you can see in the [calendar](https://knowledge.owner.app/en/calendar?hsLang=en) when a contract starts or expires.
- Want to pass costs on to a tenant? Do that with a [sales item](https://knowledge.owner.app/en/sales-items?hsLang=en) on the rental contract, for example service costs.
## Coming soon: linking to purchase invoices
Purchase invoices are expected to be available from January 1, 2027. You'll then link purchase items to a purchase invoice and can match the purchase invoice with the service contract. Read more in [Purchase invoices](https://knowledge.owner.app/en/purchase-invoices?hsLang=en).
