# How do I create a document and have it signed digitally?

## From template to digitally signed document, without re-uploading anything.

In OWNER, you create a document from your own template, for example a lease, and then have it signed digitally. The signed version comes back into OWNER automatically.

## Before you start

You need a document template. You set it up once under **Settings \> Modules \> Files \> Documents**. Read how in [Templates](https://knowledge.owner.app/en/templates?hsLang=en).

Want to have an existing document signed, such as a PDF you drew up yourself? Then upload it and continue at step 3.

## Creating a document and having it signed

### Step 1 – Create the document from the template

1. In the main menu, go to **Files \> Documents** (not to Settings).
2. Click **New** and choose **Create from template**.
3. Choose the template, the rental contract and the unit. OWNER fills the labels in the template with the data from OWNER.
4. Click **Create**.

### Step 2 – Check it and finalize it

1. Open the document and check that all details are correct.
2. Choose **Actions \> Finalize document**.

**Note:** Only finalize a document once you've checked everything.

### Step 3 – Make the document signable

1. Choose **Actions \> Make signable**.
2. Choose who needs to sign and by which date.

### Step 4 – Place the fields

1. A menu with fields appears above the document. Drag the fields to the right place, such as the signature and details the signer needs to fill in.
2. Check that each field is linked to the right signer.

### Step 5 – Send for signing

1. Choose **Actions \> Send for signing**.
2. The signers receive an email and sign digitally.

## After signing

As soon as everyone has signed, OWNER updates the status and the signed version is automatically in OWNER. You don't need to re-upload anything.

**Tip:** Save the signed lease in the middle of the rental contract. Persons with access to the rental contract then also see it in their own account.
